ABOUT THE AIRPORT

History, Technical Data, and Development Strategy of Ulyanovsk-Baratayevka International Airport – The Region’s Key Aviation Hub. The first aircraft to perform demonstration flights over the Fairground Square appeared in the skies above Simbirsk (now Ulyanovsk) a century ago in 1913. Later, in 1924, an agitational flight from Tsaritsyn (now Volgograd) concluded in Ulyanovsk. That same year, the city’s first aviation passengers emerged over the course of a week, local residents were treated to scenic flights above the city. In 1925, work began on establishing a dedicated airfield. Initially, the site hosted the 3rd Aviation Squadron of the 173rd Kuibyshev Aviation Detachment, operating nine Po-2 aircraft and one An-2. Ten years later, with the establishment of the Advanced Flight Training Courses, aviation gained a permanent foothold in Ulyanovsk. In 1955, construction began on a modern terminal building (for its time) with a capacity of 50 passengers per hour; it was commissioned in 1957. This historic building remains in active use today, housing the aerodrome services of the Ulyanovsk Civil Aviation College. The first scheduled air route Kuibyshev–Ulyanovsk–Moscow was launched using An-2 and Il-14 aircraft. For many years, however, the Ulyanovsk airfield could accommodate only small aircraft, and the runway was located near the Avtozavod (Automobile Plant) district. In 1970, with the participation of the Leningrad branch of “LenAeroProject,” a new terminal with a capacity of 400 passengers per hour was constructed and commissioned. In 2010, a comprehensive reconstruction project for the terminal was launched, funded by the Ulyanovsk Region budget. Currently, JSC “Ulyanovsk Airport” is a dynamically developing enterprise in the aviation sector, holding a strong competitive position in the regional market.

In 2009, a Decree of the President of the Russian Federation transferred 100% of the airport’s shares from federal to regional ownership. Shortly thereafter, large-scale reconstruction of the terminal building commenced. In 2013, the main reconstructed section of the terminal was commissioned, featuring modern infrastructure and enhanced passenger comfort. The new facility has a capacity of 240 passengers per hour. The reconstruction included replacement of engineering systems, connection to external utilities, installation of an integrated video surveillance system, completion of interior finishing, and deployment of state-of-the-art equipment for security screening, baggage handling, and flight information systems. The terminal now offers comfortable waiting areas, modern check-in counters, and cafés.
